Corneal Inlay Vision Correction Surgery

An Introduction to Corneal Inlay & Kamra

  • After over 10 years of research and development, completed clinical trials in Europe and Asia, and over 15,000 inlays inserted worldwide, this breakthrough technology has received approval in Canada and is now available at the Clearview Institute.

What Conditions Does Corneal Inlay & Kamra Address?

This innovative procedure is for the correction of reading glasses. Presbyopia – the need for reading glasses – typically occurs over the age of 45 because as the eyes age, they lose their ability to zoom from distant to near objects. Presbyopia will affect all of us at some point in our lives.

Corneal Inlay & Kamra

How Do Corneal Inlay & Kamra Work?

The Corneal Inlay is an implant that aims to reverse the effects of presbyopia and restore near and intermediate vision. It achieves this by using a tiny (3.8 mm diameter) microscopic black ring with a central 1.6 mm aperture that is only 5 microns thick. These dimensions are thinner than a single cell on the surface of the cornea and smaller than a contact lens.

The surgeon places the inlay in the non-dominant eye either through a flap created in the surface of the cornea or in a pocket created in the corneal tissue. The process usually takes less than 15 minutes. Once in place, the inlay allows only focused light to enter the eye while blocking unfocused light.

The principle is that a narrowed aperture to look through increases the depth of focus 1, sometimes referred to as the “pinhole effect” 2, allowing a full spectrum of vision from distance, intermediate, all the way to the tiniest line of print for near.

The “pinhole effect” is a similar concept to that found in photography where a narrowed aperture increases the depth of focus in the picture so objects both in the distance and in the foreground are seen with sharp relief.
