Recovering from Your LASIK Procedure

LASIK has become a popular procedure to permanently correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and glaucoma. Advancements in LASIK technology has made more people candidates for the procedure than ever before. Easy and painless describe the recovery from LASIK. Here is a list of what you can expect after the surgery as well as what you can do to ensure a smooth and quick recovery:

Day of Surgery

  • Make sure you can rely on a family member or friend that can take you home as you won’t be able to drive after surgery
  • It is normal to experience blurriness immediately after surgery
  • Take the rest of the day to rest. Taking a 3-4 hour nap can help to alleviate some of the discomfort you may experience after surgery
  • Avoid activities that may irritate your eyes
  • It is important to wear the protective eyeglasses provided to you as you may experience sensitivity to light
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. Keep eyes lubricated by following the eye drop schedule provided by your doctor
  • Avoid getting water or soap in the eyes

Day after Surgery

  • Drive short distances if your doctor confirms you have adequate vision at your post-operative evaluation
  • It is safe to attend school or work as long as you don’t engage in anything strenuous
  • You may still experience some discomfort the day after surgery
  • Continue to keep eyes lubricated
  • Avoid wearing eye makeup for a week
  • Avoid swimming pools, whirlpools, and hot tubs for 1-2 months

Life after LASIK

Life after LASIK will be amazing as you see the world with the sharpest vision. It may take some time getting used to as you catch yourself in situations when you once depended on glasses or contact lenses. You will be reminded in these moments that you made the right decision with LASIK.
