What is Laser Cataract Surgery?

Traditional cataract surgery is performed with hand-held blades and other manual instruments. The laser cataract approach, however, utilizes a bladeless laser to automate and/or assist most of the critical parts of the operation. This leads to enhanced precision, accuracy and a more gentle approach.

Why Choose Laser Cataract Surgery?

As you can see above, people choose laser cataract surgery primarily because it is the most advanced version of cataract surgery, delivering improved and safer results, as well as better visual recovery.

Advantages of Laser Cataract Surgery

There are three advantages of laser cataract surgery over traditional cataract surgery:

  1. Laser cataract surgery delivers precise and therefore highly safe results at all points of the procedure.
  2. Laser cataract surgery also provides patients with improved visual results due to its precision.
  3. Laser cataract surgery increases the likelihood that the incision will be self-sealing at the end of the procedure, which reduces the risk of infection.

Maintaining Healthy Eyes as We Age

Maintaining healthy eyes as we age should be a priority, but most of us never think about getting older. Lots of us think we will never age, but “old man time” creeps up on us without making a sound. Suddenly you or your parents have become part of the senior generation. As you look in the mirror, well, you see that older version of yourself. When did THAT happen?

How Laser Cataract Surgery compares to Traditional Cataract Surgery

Both traditional cataract surgery and Laser cataract surgery are among the most common procedures worldwide. We get excellent results with both techniques. Some patients are clinically better suited for laser cataract surgery which we confirm at the consultation. In those cases, you can make an informed choice after you have the necessary information as it pertains to you.

To understand how laser cataract surgery works, we need to outline the procedure for traditional cataract surgery.

  1. The first step is for the surgeon to make an incision in the cornea so they can remove the cataract and then replace it with an intraocular lens. Traditionally, this process involves the manual use of blades and needles to remove a portion of the capsule that surrounds the eye’s natural lens. However, this is a very delicate process, and we must give careful attention to ensure that we do not damage the capsule in the process. Laser cataract surgery uses advanced technology – a laser – to create a very precise incision. We can guide the exact placement of the incision by taking a 3-D image of the eye called an OCT (optical coherence tomography).
  2. The next part of traditional cataract surgery involves removing the cataract, which surgeons do via an ultrasonic device that breaks up the cataract.

Before we remove the cataract lens, the laser softens the cataract as it breaks it up, reducing the likelihood of burning.
